The Clubhouse Conversation: Why Palm Harbor Retirees Are Talking About Niagen®

Healthy AgingOctober 19, 20267 min read

What Niagen® is, why it's popular with adults over 50, and what the science supports.

Spend a morning at a Palm Harbor golf course, a pickleball court in Pinellas County, or a coffee shop downtown, and you'll eventually hear it: “Have you tried Niagen?” Active retirees and adults over 50 are some of the most curious, well-read wellness consumers we meet, and they want straight answers.

What Is Niagen®?

Niagen® is a branded form of nicotinamide riboside (NR), a form of vitamin B3. Your body uses NR to make NAD+, a coenzyme that supports cellular energy metabolism and normal cellular repair.

Why NAD+ Matters as We Age

Research on human skin samples found that NAD+ levels tend to be lower in older adults [1]. That's why NAD+ precursors like NR have become a focus of healthy-aging research.

What the Research Says

  • NR raises NAD+. Human studies show oral NR increases NAD+ levels, and higher doses produce larger increases [2,4].

  • Well tolerated in older adults. Healthy adults aged 55–79 tolerated six weeks of daily NR well, with higher blood NAD+ levels [3].

  • Early signals. In men in their 70s, NR increased NAD+-related metabolites in muscle and was associated with lower levels of some inflammatory markers [5].

  • Mixed outcomes. Not every study found benefits. One trial saw no improvement in insulin sensitivity in men with obesity [6].

In short, research supports that NR raises NAD+ and is generally well tolerated. More research is needed on long-term health outcomes, and most published studies used oral NR rather than IV or injections.

Why It Appeals to Active Adults Over 50

Living in Palm Harbor means year-round sunshine and an active calendar of golf, boating, biking the Pinellas Trail, and visits from family. Many of our guests over 50 see Niagen as one piece of a wellness routine that also includes movement, hydration in the Florida heat, good sleep, and regular checkups.

Inside the Studies: A Retiree's Guide to the Research

You've probably heard plenty of claims at the clubhouse. Here's what the published human research actually found:

Can your body absorb it?

In a 2016 study, 12 healthy adults took single doses of NR, and their blood NAD+-related compounds rose with each dose [2].

Is it well tolerated after 55?

Thirty healthy adults aged 55 to 79 took 1,000 mg per day for six weeks. NR was well tolerated, and blood-cell NAD+ was roughly 60% higher than with placebo [3].

What about two months of use?

In 140 healthy overweight adults, eight weeks of NR raised whole-blood NAD+ by 22% to 142%, depending on dose, with side effects similar to placebo [4].

What happens in older muscle?

In 12 men aged 70 to 80, three weeks of NR raised NAD+-related compounds in muscle and lowered some inflammation markers in the blood. It did not change how muscle mitochondria produced energy [5].

Is it a cure-all?

No. A 12-week study of 40 men with obesity found NR was safe but didn't improve insulin sensitivity [6].

Bottom line: NR reliably raises NAD+ and was well tolerated in these studies. Larger, longer research is still needed on long-term benefits.

The Palm Harbor Lifestyle and Healthy Aging

What makes Palm Harbor such a great place to age well? The lifestyle itself. Sunshine, walkable downtown streets, the Pinellas Trail, Honeymoon Island, and a calendar full of golf, tennis, and pickleball. Niagen can be one piece of that picture, but the basics still do the heavy lifting:

  • Stay hydrated. Florida heat and humidity increase fluid needs, even in fall and winter.

  • Protect your skin. Sun safety matters at every age.

  • Strength train. Muscle helps support balance, mobility, and independence.

  • Stay social. Clubs, volunteering, and time with family all count.

  • Keep up with checkups. Especially if you split your year between Florida and up north.

Who Should Talk With Their Doctor First

Niagen isn't right for everyone. Please check with your physician before starting if you are being treated for cancer, have kidney, liver, or heart conditions, take several prescription medications, or are pregnant or nursing. Seasonal residents should also keep their doctor back home informed, especially if you see different providers in Florida and up north. Bring a complete medication and supplement list to your visit so our medical team can review it with you. If anything raises a question, we'll ask you to check with your physician before your first session.

Healthy Aging: FAQs

Is Niagen FDA-approved to treat aging?

No. Niagen is not approved to treat or prevent any disease, and nothing reverses aging. It may support cellular energy as part of a healthy lifestyle.

I'm a seasonal resident. Can I do a series while I'm in town?

Yes. Our team can plan a series around your season in Palm Harbor.

How is Niagen different from NAD+ therapy?

Niagen provides a precursor; NAD+ therapy delivers NAD+ directly. We offer both and can explain the differences during your consultation.
